07 Nov Maryland assistant basketball coach arrested for drunk driving
On behalf of Jack B. Rubin, PA posted in Drunk Driving on Thursday, November 7, 2013.
An assistant coach for a Maryland basketball team has recently been arrested for drunk driving as well as other charges. Maryland police allege that the coach was driving under the influence and speeding, which led officers to arrest him for drunk driving, although the report does not give details about why the arrest occurred in the first place. The coach has taken an immediate leave of absence from the program.
While the report does not say how he was arrested, the coach faces four charges nonetheless. The coach was arrested recently and charged with driving under the influence, attempting to drive a vehicle while impaired by alcohol, attempting to drive a vehicle while impaired by a controlled substance and failure to control vehicle speed to avoid a collision. The report does not indicate how much jail time each charge carries if convicted.
The charges that the coach faces imply that drugs and speeding was involved in the incident as well as possibly a crash. However, the report does not indicate whether any of this is true, and, most importantly, it does not state why he was arrested in the first place. The report also does not state if a blood-alcohol test was taken or if a field sobriety test was performed instead.
Since this is not the first time that the coach has been arrested for drunk driving, it may be unlikely that he will be offered a plea deal. However, if the report is indeed as lacking as it appears to be, it may be hard for Maryland prosecutors to make the charges stick. If enough evidence to prove the coach’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt is not produced by prosecutors, then his case could be thrown out of court entirely.
