05 Jan Drug charges for 27 arrests over 4 day investigation in Maryland

It is the opinion of the sheriff’s office in Frederick County that Maryland drug crime, in general, can best be combatted by adopting a proactive approach against drug trafficking. Authorities reported that the drastic increase in drug-related crimes and drug overdoses have motivated them to carry out intense investigations throughout the county. They report that their longer term challenge will be to stop drug trafficking into the county from neighboring states, thereby decreasing the occurrence of illegal use as well as the drug charges that typically result.
Deputies conducted traffic stops and made 27 drug related arrests over a period of four days. Vehicles were pulled over for typical violations but were also checked for signs of drugs being present. Heroin, cocaine, marijuana and prescription drugs were seized as part of the operation. Although some of the arrests were for drug trafficking, many were for possession alone.
Authorities claimed that one of their main objectives was to get users of drugs recorded into the system and into treatment programs while their addictions are still treatable. With this intervention, deaths due to drug overdose and criminal activities may be prevented to some degree. Officials stated that the need for money to satisfy drug addictions causes other criminal activities. By sentencing those convicted of possession to drug treatment centers rather than incarceration facilities, users reportedly have a greater probability of being rehabilitated.
Those who find themselves facing drug charges in Maryland will understandably need to gain an awareness of their legal options as their individual case proceeds through the criminal justice system. The accused may be better prepared once they understand the applicable laws and local court procedures. Every person is entitled to legal representation and remains innocent unless and until proved guilty in court and by the strict measure of proof required.
