27 May Doctor may plead guilty to federal drug offenses
On behalf of Jack B. Rubin, PA posted in Drug Charges on Tuesday, May 27, 2014.
Federal drug charges often carry harsher consequences than other drug crimes. These stronger punishments can include extensive fines and up to life behind bars in the most serious of cases. However, when a Maryland resident has been accused of any kind of drug offenses, it is important to remember that one has legal rights and can fight the charges brought against them, if desired.
A Maryland gynecologist was previously charged for distribution and possession of drugs. The physician has been in gynecology and obstetrics for three decades. In Nov. 2013, he surrendered his license to practice medicine.
A representative for the doctor expects that the physician will plead guilty to the federal charges against him. He has allegedly been distributing painkillers illegally to his patients. He had reportedly distributed oxycodone, morphine and numerous other substances.
A federal investigation was launched into these allegations. During the investigation, female genitalia images were discovered on the doctor’s phone. However, the images were supposedly medical in nature. At this time, the physician is not facing any charges associated with these images.
Prosecutors are often zealous in pursuing many cases, such as when they are trying to convict a person in Maryland of federal drug offenses. However, an accused individual is not guilty until proven so by presenting sufficient evidence at trial. In this particular case, the doctor is expected to plead guilty, which may be so that he can receive a reduced sentence. Whatever the case may be, defendants have the right to fight all charges brought against them by examining all aspects of the evidence and possibly finding weaknesses in the prosecution’s case against them.
