02 Sep 2 face charges for alleged crack cocaine possession
On behalf of Jack B. Rubin, PA posted in Drug Charges on Tuesday, September 2, 2014.
A traffic stop in Maryland on Aug. 28 resulted in two individuals being detained on drug charges. The incident occurred in Glen Burnie near Interstate 97 and Crain Highway. During a traffic stop, authorities reportedly discovered that the 43-year-old female driver had a suspended license. When her 33-year-old male passenger was told to step out of the car, officers claim they saw a bag of a substance believed to be crack cocaine in the vehicle. Police ran a check on the man and discovered that he had a warrant for a parole retake.
Authorities claim they seized $151 from the pair along with drug paraphernalia, more than 7 grams of alleged heroin and 23 bags of crack cocaine. The two now face charges of drug possession with the intent to distribute and others. Traffic citations were also issued to the woman.
Because penalties for drug charges can be severe, these individuals may wish to consult with an attorney. There might be several approaches the defense can take.
If the police failed to read an individual their rights, or if some other procedural aspect was not done correctly, charges in a case like this could be dismissed. A criminal defense attorney could raise questions about due cause of the officers to search the car. A defendant might also be able to make a plea deal in exchange for lighter sentences.
If a case involves multiple people, an individual may also be able to negotiate a lighter sentence in exchange for their testimony. Those facing similar criminal violations may benefit from seeking legal counsel as soon as possible.
