13 Oct 2 men plead guilty in drug-related charges
On behalf of Jack B. Rubin, PA posted in Drug Charges on Monday, October 13, 2014.
A 52-year-old Maryland man accused of involvement in heroin distribution pleaded guilty one week after his 31-year-old co-conspirator pleaded guilty to the same charges. Both men reportedly admitted to possessing heroin with the intent to distribute.
According to authorities, the two men were part of a larger ring of conspirators involved in distributing heroin. A number of law enforcement agencies were involved in the investigation, including the Easton Police Department, the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office and the St. Michael’s Police Department. According to news reports, investigators used a wiretap to listen to both men discussing selling the heroin with other conspirators. They report that the older man met another conspirator in a restaurant to conduct a drug transaction.
The younger man was based in New York and would obtain the heroin there and then travel by bus to Maryland. He would also take the money from heroin sales back to New York. According to authorities, the two may have distributed up to 100 grams of heroin. The 31-year-old is facing up to 40 years in prison, and the 52-year-old is facing 11 years. The former will be sentenced in January 2015 and the latter in November.
The two individuals might have been advised by their attorneys to plead guilty if the prosecution presented strong evidence for the drug charges. Individuals finding themselves in similar situations may benefit from seeking the advice of an attorney. Depending on the circumstances of a particular case, a criminal defense attorney may advise a different strategy in order to mitigate sentencing or avoid a conviction altogether.
