20 Mar Student faces weapons charge after bring gun onto school property

With so many school shootings today, it isn’t uncommon for students, teachers and school officials to be paranoid. However, this does not give them the right to assume certain actions have or will take place. This is something that a Maryland high school student who is currently facing a weapons charge after allegedly knowingly bringing a gun onto school property may want to keep in mind as he tries to overcome these charges.

Administrators at the high school claim that a student informed one of the teachers that another student had possibly been drinking alcohol. This student was apparently taken to the office to discuss the situation with the administrators. During this time, they claim that they were able to determine the 16-year-old student parked a truck on campus that was not authorized. Further, they claim that they believed there were illegal drugs in the truck.

The truck was searched and a shotgun was found in the bed. The gun was not loaded, but a single shell for the shotgun was reportedly found in the cab. In addition, the cab also contained a bottle with alcohol contents. According to the news story, the student had not made threats against anyone — teachers, students or others — at the school. However, he is currently facing criminal charges on the weapons offense in addition to disciplinary action from the school board.

This boy, as does anyone in Maryland that is facing similar charges, has the right to build a criminal defense in his favor. A strong criminal defense will likely evaluate the entire incident and could possibly find holes in the actions of the administrators at the school and the police officers that were called on scene. Ultimately, the boy will likely want to ensure his rights are fully and adequately protected as he moves forward and fights against the weapons charge that have been brought against him.
