14 Aug Big rig driver accused of drug offenses for meth, heroin

Following a traffic stop on I-95 in Havre de Grace, a 52-year-old commercial truck driver was arrested. During the stop, the Maryland officers claim that they found around $1 million worth of suspected heroin and $100,000 worth of suspected methamphetamine. The trucker has been accused of several drug offenses resulting from the incident.

At about 8:40 p.m., local authorities pulled the big rig over on the Interstate. The specifics of what led to the traffic stop are unclear, but the officers allegedly suspected that the commercial truck driver failed to observe a traffic control device and was driving negligently. One of the officers claimed that he saw “numerous” signs of potential criminal activity during the stop, but the specific observations were not reported.

The officers called a K9 unit for back up, and the unit indicated the presence of drugs within the big rig. When the officers searched the truck, they supposedly found 484 grams of meth and 5,700 grams of heroin. The accused man faces charges for possessing narcotics with intent to distribute, possessing a large amount of drugs and importing drugs into the state. He is being held without bail in Hartford County.

Sometimes, the police say they have amassed large amounts of evidence against an accused individual. However, that individual is presumed innocent until, and only if, proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The truck driver will be given every opportunity to defend himself against all accusations of drug offenses as the Maryland criminal process continues. He may also have an opportunity to negotiate a plea agreement, if one is offered and he believes that it is in his best interests.
