24 Apr Dangers of identity theft
On behalf of Jack B. Rubin, PA posted in Internet Crimes on Friday, April 24, 2015.
Whenever someone uses and obtains another individual’s personal identifying information in a fraudulent or deceptive manner, this is known as identity theft. Identity theft has become a growing problem in Maryland and around the country in past several years. Because of this, it is vital for individuals to understand how personal information is commonly stolen and how to prevent it from coming into the wrong hands.
PIN and Social Security numbers, credit histories and other types of personal information are generally sought out by identity thieves. This information is often acquired by unlawfully accessing information utilized by the government and financial institutions and stealing wallets, purses, credit cards, mail and other personal belongings. Sensitive information can also be exposed when businesses and banks experience security breaches.
Thieves commonly steal personal info without the victim’s knowledge. Many victims have no idea their personal information has been compromised until they try to obtain a loan or see unusual charges on their credit card or bank statements. Because of the many methods that thieves can use to steal personal data, even consumers who have prepared for identify theft can become victims. In addition to personal information, victims of identity theft can also lose time, money and peace of mind.
Identity theft can result in serious charges against those who have been accused of it. If someone has been accused of committing Internet fraud or other Internet crimes, such as cyber bullying, cyber terrorism or cyber stalking, working with a criminal defense attorney to come up with a viable strategy may be an advisable course of action.
